Brazilian Jiu Jitsu – No Gi

Brazilian Jiu Jitsu is a martial art that revolves around grappling and ground fighting. Most of the techniques focus on taking your opponent to the ground where you can control and work to submit them – making them tap out. BJJ promotes the idea that a smaller, weaker person can use leverage, grip, knowledge, position plus tactical skills and problem solving to successfully defend against a bigger, stronger assailant by successfully applying a range of techniques like chokeholds and joint locks.

Brazilian Jiu Jitsu – No Gi

In BJJ, you can train with Gi or with No Gi.  The former enables you to grab the gi of your opponent, for example the collar or the sleeve, and you can use your opponent’s gi or your own to submit them.  These grips allow you to have greater control of the fight and enable a much smaller opponent to control a larger one.

In No Gi, we wear a rash guard and MMA style shorts (so no zips, buttons and/or pockets) and you’re not allowed to grab your opponent’s clothing.  In No Gi you have more wrestling based grips such as the neck and all joints of the body and it’s therefore harder to control your opponent.

We have Mixed and Intermediate/Advanced No Gi BJJ classes but if you’ve never trained before we would recommend taking some classes with Gi in order to learn some of the basics before moving onto No Gi.  After this, a great class to start with is our Wednesday evening Mixed No Gi session.

Sparring/rolling is included in these classes (but not for beginners) as it enables students to put what they’ve learnt to the test and many of our members participate in BJJ competitions throughout the course of the year – although this is obviously a personal decision.

Class Information

If you’d like to start training in No Gi Brazilian Jiu Jitsu but aren’t sure which category you fall into please just drop us an email.  As with all our sessions, we start with a vigorous conditioning warm up and instructors then move on to demonstrate techniques, set ups and positions. Students will then drill these and use them in the sparring that follows.

Equipment

MMA style shorts and a rash guard.  If you don’t have a rash guard then a t-shirt is fine for the first couple of classes.  Please note, there should be no zips and/or buttons and preferably no pockets on any item of clothing.

Trial Lessons

Potential students are welcome to try out one of our classes for free. Just click on the ‘Sign up for a trial class’ button and let us know when you’d like to join a class. Please note, we ideally ask for at least 48 hours’ notice as this gives us plenty of time to respond to your request!
