Combat Sambo/Sambo for MMA
Combat Sambo/Sambo for MMA is a new addition to our timetable at London Fight Factory so we thought we should explain a little about it.
Firstly, Sambo is an acronym of the Russian SAMozaschita Bez Orujiya which means self defense without weapon, and was officially recognized as a sport in 1938. Sambo as a whole is highly influenced by Judo, but also has a strong connection to the native Soviet grappling arts.
Combat Sambo is a sub-class of the sport that includes both striking and grappling; and gained recognition through the work of MMA and Sambo champion, Fedor Emelianenko. Sambo is known for its throws as well as its leg locks; arm locks are also legal, as well as pins. In Combat Sambo, chokes are also allowed, as well as punches, kicks, knee strikes, and even head butts.
Classes at London Fight Factory will start with a vigorous conditioning warm up and Silviu will then move on to demonstrate techniques, set ups and positions. Students will then drill these and use them in the sparring that follows.
Sparring will be included in classes, but students are only asked to participate when they, and the instructor, feel they’re ready.
For your first few classes you’ll just need shorts and a t-shirt with no zips, buttons or pockets.
Depending on your level of experience, you’ll also need to buy, or consider buying, head protection, open-fingered gloves (similar to MMA gloves, but with more padding), and shin/instep guards on the legs.
Potential students are welcome to try out one of our classes for free. Just click on the ‘Free First Class’ button and let us know when you’d like to come down. Please note though that we do ask for at least 2 days notice.
