No Gi classes in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu differ from those where you wear a Gi in many ways. If you train with Gi then this enables you to grab the Gi of your opponent, for example the collar or the sleeve, and use it – or your own Gi – to submit them. These grips allow you to have greater control of the fight and enable a much smaller opponent to control a larger one. In No Gi you have more wrestling based grips, such as the neck and all joints of the body, and it is therefore harder to control your opponent.
What No Gi Classes Can I Attend?
Are you looking for No Gi Grappling classes near me? If you’ve never trained in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu or No Gi BJJ before, then please join our Novice No Gi Sessions in order to learn the fundamentals of the discipline. Once you know and can demonstrate the basics, and have got the go ahead from Phil, our Novice No Gi Coach, you can move into more advanced lessons. For more advanced students, we have Mixed Ability Sessions and Inter/Advanced Classes.
What Should I Wear for No Gi BJJ?
MMA style shorts and a rash guard. If you don’t have a rash guard then a t-shirt is fine for the first couple of classes. Please note, there should be no zips and/or buttons (and preferably no pockets) on any item of clothing and please ensure your finger and toe nails are short.
What Should I Expect from my No Gi Grappling Class?
As with all our sessions, No Gi lessons start with a vigorous conditioning warm up and instructors then move on to demonstrate techniques, set ups and positions. Sparring/rolling is included in these classes (but not for beginners) as it enables students to put what they’ve learnt to the test. In addition, many of our members participate in BJJ competitions throughout the course of the year and sparring is a vital part of their preparation – although the decision to compete is obviously a personal one.
Can I Have a Trial No Gi Class?
Potential students are very welcome to try out one of our classes for free. Just click here or on the ‘Sign up for a trial class’ button and complete the form. Please note, we ideally ask for at least 48 hours’ notice as this gives us plenty of time to respond to your request.
