What to Expect in Your First BJJ Competition in the UK

Competing in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu for the first time can be both exciting and nerve-wracking. This guide will walk you through what to expect so you arrive confident and prepared.

Competition Formats

  • Single-elimination: lose once and you’re out – common in most UK comps.
  • Round-robin: face everyone in your pool – often used in kids or smaller brackets.
  • Repechage: gives competitors a second chance via a loser’s bracket – more common at higher-level events.

Divisions & Requirements

Weight, Age & Belt

Competitors are divided by weight, age group (juvenile, adult, masters), and belt level. Check your event’s weigh-in schedule and make weight comfortably.

Gi vs No-Gi

Register for the correct style—uniform and rule sets differ. Ensure your gi or no-gi kit is competition-legal.

Uniform & Hygiene

  • Gi must fit IBJJF standards and be clean.
  • Finger and toenails trimmed.
  • No jewelry or loose gear.

On the Day

Before the Match

  • Arrive early to register and weigh in.
  • Warm up with light mobility and drills.
  • Stay hydrated and conserve energy.

During the Match

  • Start calm—don’t burn out in the first minute.
  • Focus on grips, posture, and your game plan.
  • Tap early if caught—stay safe above all.

After the Match

  • Shake hands or bow respectfully, win or lose.
  • Review your performance—learn from every match.

Mindset for Your First Competition

Focus on the experience and growth rather than medals. Many top competitors learn their most important lessons from early losses.
